The cause of woodworm is usually the high moisture content in the wood of the furniture in your environment, preferred by adult female beetles which in the summer months can deposit eggs there. The larvae then burrow and when they emerge, they leave behind the exit holes you usually see. It often happens that this phenomenon has already started in warehouses or wood workshops and as a "Trojan horse" the wooden furniture carries the insects with them inside, which then also show the holes. However, just because there are holes present does not mean you have an actual (live) infestation. It may be that the woodworm left long ago leaving the damage behind, but this could mean that the wood is left weakened and potentially dangerous. In some cases of serious damage, it would be better to replace furniture, beams, etc. There are many species of wood-damaging beetles, and a group of about 5 species are the most problematic.
